Each year, Wallpaper* magazine showcases craftsmanship and creativity at its Handmade exhibition, held at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
During this annual event, the British publication pairs up brands and/or designers and their expertise to create exceptional pieces specially crafted for the occasion. Each duo does its utmost to step outside of its usual comfort zone to create works on par with the growing expectations of the design event’s audience.
For the 2018 edition, LE GRAMME focused on the theme “Wellness+Wonder*”. Faithful as always to its passion for raw materials and the importance of ritual, LE GRAMME designed a unique piece in line with the theme: a healing set dubbed “Discover the Joy of Discipline”.
While the brand is a true expert in the field of precious metals, this time it rose to a new challenge – designing a functional object in the most fragile material available: crystal. Most often used as a recipient for spirits, crystal here serves to sanctify something of superlative importance: the time and attention we devote to ourselves.
With the help of an expert in the field, Viennese crystal maker LOBMEYR, LE GRAMME designed five cylindrical containers. Each size has its own unique use and height, while all five containers share the same diameter to showcase the absolute nature of the shape. The name of each size is defined by its weight:
- A vitamin holder. The 35g.
- A dried fruit and nut container. The 41g.
- A water glass. The 99g. Engraved with the mantra “Discover the Joy of Discipline”.
- A fruit juice tumbler. The 161g.
- A water pitcher. The 209g.
Each piece features a pyramid guilloche baseline. Aligned with the top of the vitamin container on each piece, the pyramid guilloche motif creates a shared horizon for all five objects. This motif – the first explored by LE GRAMME – had also been worked on by LOBMEYR for a set developed in collaboration with A.Loos.
A silver lid (the 99g) crafted in LE GRAMME’s French workshops tops off the set of cylinders with an allusion to the brand’s bracelets, rings and keyrings.
The healing set is designed to create a ritual. The crystal cylinders are set into the surface of a tray made of volcanic rock, which is known for its natural warmth. The tray showcases the transparency and elegance of each piece of the set and invites the beholder to enjoy a moment of focus or contemplation while observing what some people might imagine to be a submarine or a meditation space.
LE GRAMME has designed a morning ritual, which users can personalise by determining the order, ingredients and context (by placing the set in front of a photo, landscape or window for example). Like all of LE GRAMME’s functional and wearable objects, this new creation can be engraved with a phrase or mantra.
Each part of the set is the product of a challenge to push the limits of the possible with demanding, fragile materials and of the uncompromising aesthetics of LE GRAMME & LOBMEYR.
With this piece, happiness and minimalist lines seem to have the same origin: discipline.
